Romania: Rural Transylvania & MaramureÈ™ (7 Days)
This section focuses on Saxon villages, traditional crafts, and the unique wooden culture of MaramureÈ™.
Day 1: Arrival in Transylvania
-
Arrival: Arrive at Sibiu International Airport (SBZ). Sibiu is a beautiful city, but we'll use it only as a gateway.
-
Activity: Pick up your rental car and immediately drive to a remote Saxon village like Viscri or Saschiz (about 1.5 - 2 hours drive).
-
Accommodation/Dinner: Stay in a traditional guesthouse (pensiune) in Viscri. Enjoy a home-cooked dinner with ingredients sourced from the village gardens and local producers. This is the authentic, non-touristy experience.
Day 2: Saxon Village Life
-
Morning: Have breakfast at your guesthouse.
-
Cultural Activity: Visit the Viscri Fortified Church (a UNESCO site, but less crowded than others). The truly unique activity is visiting the local blacksmith's workshop or meeting the brick-maker—supporting local craftspeople.
-
Afternoon: Take a leisurely hike or bike ride through the rolling hills and forests between Viscri and other Saxon villages like Crit. This is where you see shepherds and horse-drawn carts.
-
Evening: Enjoy a wine tasting at a local cellar, like the one in Saschiz, focusing on Transylvanian wines.
Day 3: Journey to MaramureÈ™
-
Travel: Drive north towards the region of MaramureÈ™ (approx. 6-7 hours drive). This is a long but incredibly scenic drive through the heart of the Carpathians.
-
Stopover: Break the journey with a lunch stop in a town like Cluj-Napoca, but skip the main sights. Instead, explore the local Piața Cipariu market for a quick and authentic bite.
-
Accommodation: Check into a traditional wooden house or guesthouse (casa traditionala) in a quiet Maramureș village like Brehova or Săcel.
Day 4: The Wooden Culture of MaramureÈ™
-
Morning: Explore the unique wooden churches of MaramureÈ™ (UNESCO sites). Skip the largest, most touristed one and focus on smaller ones like Bârsana Monastery or Desesti Church.
-
Unique Activity: Visit a local wood carver's home/workshop to see the traditional craft that built these churches and gates. MaramureÈ™ is the land of wood craftsmanship.
-
Afternoon: Experience the local life by helping a family with the hay harvest or plum picking (depending on the exact September dates). This is often possible if you stay in a true homestay.
-
Dinner: Participate in a traditional cooking class focusing on regional dishes like mămăligă and sarmale.
Day 5: Steam Train & Traditional Crafts
-
Unique Activity: Ride the Mocănița steam train on the Vaser Valley line (Vişeu de Sus). While popular, the journey deep into the unspoiled valley is a stunning, non-commercial experience of the landscape.
-
Afternoon: Visit the SăpânÈ›a Merry Cemetery, which, despite being known, offers a unique cultural perspective on Romanian attitudes towards death (it's less a tourist trap and more a fascinating art exhibit).
-
Cultural Event: Seek out a local horă (traditional village dance/social gathering) on a Sunday, or simply enjoy a quiet evening in the village.
