The Wisdom of The Circle: An Elephant Safari Story

I did not notice it right away. The dusty ground was blurring the sight. Then we felt heavy thuds, a soft vibration that felt deeper, then the sight cleared- a herd of elephants! Huge in size, well, not all of them. Then a pause. Our jeep came to a jolt. There it was- a baby elephant was having a hard time. Its legs were small and tired, and it was puffing to keep up with the rest.
Now it's a complete stop; and that's when it changed. The matriarch elephant, the leader, turned around. She stepped back, turned to the baby elephant. Soon the rest of the herd did too. Because the matriarch stopped, everyone stopped too. And now they were making a big, safe circle with their giant bodies.
It felt like a hug. No rush. No urgency. They didn't leave the little one alone - until the baby was ready.
This is how elephants live. They stay together. They watch out for each other.

She guides the herd to water, food, and shelter, utilizing her long-term memory for survival, especially during dry seasons. Matriarchs protect the group and teach younger elephants crucial social behaviors.
