There is a specific kind of magic that happens when you stop trying to "see" a city and start simply being in it.

That's Paris and Amsterdam where it whisper wonder to a wanderer.

When the Eiffel tower was built for the 1889 World’s Fair, the elite artists of Paris hated it. They called it a "gigantic black giant smokestack". There were protests signed by famous writers to stop its construction. It was originally intended to be torn down after 20 years, but it was saved because its height made it the perfect giant antenna for the new technology of "radiotelegraphy."

I’ve been to Paris over a dozen times. I wouldn’t call myself an expert (NOT at all), but I am certainly a big fan of its soul. I find comfort in its familiarity, such as the way the steam rises off a Parisian breakfast of a perfectly shattered croissant and a café crème that tastes luxury - such calls for one to experience, oh yes, woman!

One late afternoon, I found myself drawn back to Shakespeare and Co. in the Latin Quarter. You walk into a labyrinth of literature where the scent of paper and the hum of street sounds melt away, leaving you lost in its narrow, book-lined sanctuary.

As a woman in her upper 50s, I’ve learned that "wandering" is a legitimate travel skill. My favorite days are spent in the flea markets and second hand "brand" stores. But there’s also a new fire in this chapter of life. I’m ready to return to the Crazy Horse Paris and invite myself in their avant-garde, seductive performances! It is art, it is provocative, and it’s unapologetically French.

And then there is Amsterdam, a city that doesn’t rush you, but gently pulls you into its rhythm.

Cruising through its UNESCO-listed canals, you begin to understand what it means to be fully present as you watch the water ripple as if carrying the energy of life itself through its calm, steady currents. Time softens here.

Would it be nice to bike perhaps, or simply walk along endless stretches of the colorful tulip fields, letting the Dutch winds move freely through your hair while the iconic windmills turn in the distance.

This is a city reminding me that everything has its own pace. And then, there is the city’s sparkling contrast, the De Wallen, often called the Red Light District, where curiosity, history and bold expression of human stories. You do not come here for judgment, but to feel, to reflect, and completely - as a wanderer moving through both beauty and truth.

Are you ready to say YES to markets, the Crazy Horse, canals, and the moments you didn't know you needed?

My Top 7 Must Cultural Experiences in Paris

Forget the souvenir shops. The Saint-Ouen Flea Market is the largest in the world and a literal museum of French life.
