Finding the World's Coolest Coffee Shops, One Latte at a Time

Whenever I travel, I have one non-negotiable ritual.
Before I visit the city's attractions, I look for a coffee shop, and one with character. The kind where locals linger, ambiance is homey, has a uniqueness of its own, and it tells a story. I always order a latte (yes, I'm loyal), but I also make sure to pair it with a local pastry. If you really want to understand a place, start with what the locals bake.
So far, these are some of my favorites:
El Péndulo Bookstore Café – Condesa neighborhood in Polanco, Mexico City
Quirky, lively, and where a spiral staircase takes center stage. Bright, open spaces, eclectic décor, cozy reading nooks, live music, and café-style seating create an atmosphere that invites you to linger long after your latte is gone.
New York Café – Budapest, Hungary
Often called one of the most beautiful cafés in the world, New York Café is worth every minute of the wait. The line may test your patience, but the moment you step beneath its glittering chandeliers and grand frescoed ceilings, you'll understand why. I visited during the Christmas season, making the experience even more magical- a step into another century.
Cartoon Cafe – Siargao, Philippines
From the moment you step inside, you feel you're part of a hand-drawn storybook, where every wall, table, and corner sparks curiosity, creativity, and childlike wonder. Everything is black & white except for its delicious food.
U & ME Coffee – Kanchanaburi, Thailand
We traveled miles from Bangkok City and found this hidden gem!
Step into the backyard, and it feels like a whimsical promenade where every turn is a 'selfie-feast'. It's vibrant, full of creative details, and playful- a destination all on its own.
My Coffee Porto – Porto, Portugal
The moment you step inside, you feel a sense of nostalgia. Time slows just enough for you to savor it. With a latte in hand and a fresh Portuguese pastry on the table, I was reminded that travel is about moments and allowing these to stay with you long after you've gone.
I'm far from finished. - in fact, I hope I never finish.
Where should I have my next latte? If you have a favorite, send it my way. My coffee passport is still collecting stamps.
