Tea, Dates, Prayer Beads - add in too much hospitality to simply say no.

One thing I’ve learned from traveling through some countries is this: Never accept an invitation for tea - quickly. Most times it is rarely just tea.

So you say - sure. You sit down for what you think is a quick tea time, and you're offered a cup or two that comes with dates, nuts, sweets, maybe coffee, while that beautiful set of prayer beads hang loosely on his wrists.

And then comes the magic carpet. Oh, the carpet, the leather bags, or whatever.

Then you learn that there is a very fine line between “How beautiful!” and “How much is it?”

Because once you ask the second question, you may already be at risk.

The hospitality, though, is real. Someone invites you to sit, share tea, eat, and talk. For a moment, you are a guest - until that beautiful carpet rolls in.

Then the charm turns into full-on sales mode. Saying no to the persistent sales pitch isn't easy. Seriously, not easy.

So I've learned a few rules: Drink the tea. Eat the dates. Admire the craftsmanship.

But if you don't want the carpet? Don't say, “maybe,” because maybe can mean, “Please bring out three more.”

And those beautiful prayer beads? Well, those are a little harder to resist.

That is the funny thing about travel. You go looking for history, culture and connection, and you come home with a story, prayer beads, and something you absolutely swore you weren't going to buy.

It's part of the adventure.
